10 Euro silver commemorative "abbey of St. Paul im Lavanttal" - proof
Date of issue: Oktober 10, 2007
The abbey was founded by Benedictine monks in 1091 on a hill that had seen earlier Roman and medieval fortresses. In 1787 St. Paul.s fell victim to the monastic closures of Emperor Joseph II.
It was not refounded until 1809 when monks from the Black Forest area of Germany, fleeing Napoleon and his own wave of monastic closures, settled in St. Paul im Lavanttal. Thanks to the treasures they brought with them, and to an active collecting spirit ever since, St. Paul.s is now known as the Treasure House of Carinthia.
The obverse shows a view of the abbey from the air, while the reverse features the south portal in Romanesque style, although it was built only in 1618 from the remains of the earlier rood screen (the partition wall between the sanctuary and the nave of the church).
