Nonnberg, which nestles under the protection of the great castle of "Hohensalzburg", is the oldest convent north of the Alps still inhabited by nuns. It was founded around 714 by the first archbishop of Salzburg, St. Rupert, who installed St. Erentrudis (a relative, probably his niece), as the first abbess.

Nonnberg played an important role in the conversion of the region to Christianity. Over the centuries nuns went forth from Nonnberg to found new convents throughout Austria, Southern Germany, Switzerland and Northern Italy.
