5 Euro - Land of Forests (2011)

One is struck from the first by this nine sided coin, symbolic for the nine federal provinces of Austria. Their coats-of arms encircle the denomination "5" with the inscription "Republik Österreich" and "Euro".

One side of the coin depicts three forest dwellers – the red deer, the pheasant and the badger – as well as typical forest plants. Austria is famed for its forests and woodlands. Indeed, woodland covers half the country‘s surface area.

As well as providing a habitat for animal and plant life, forested land is crucial for the climate and offers people numerous opportunities for leisure and relaxation. As a testimony to the importance of these eco-systems, the United Nations has declared 2011 to be the International Year of Forests.
